30 Years Of The Royal Oak Offshore: A Retrospective

Featuring a vibrant equalizer motif on the dials, the new Royal Oak Offshores bring the elements of a music studio to your wrist. Let's hit the play button and take a closer look at these pop-style pieces

Audemars Piguet has, on several occasions, brought music, artists, watchmakers, craftspeople, and watch enthusiasts together. Earlier this year, it turned up the volume to announce Grammy award-winning British-American DJ, songwriter, and record producer Mark Ronson as its new brand ambassador. And who can forget the year 2005 and The Royal Oak Offshore Jay-Z 10th Anniversary Limited Edition, designed in collaboration with hip-hop giant Jay-Z; not to mention Ed Sheeran's obsession with the ceramic Royal Oaks.

With that being said, the latest Music Edition models were only inevitable. The five new Royal Oak Offshore references amplify the brand's long-standing relationship with music. Available in 37mm and 43mm, these watches – two in titanium, two in gem-set 18k white gold and one in black ceramic – use different materials and bring the spirit of recording studios to the dial. The sonical design of the Tapisserie dials exquisitely represents the pattern of an equalizer and celebrates the brand's vivid association with the music world.

Equipped with selfwinding movements – the new Caliber 5909 for the 37mm models and Caliber 4309 for the 43 mm variants – these new Royal Oaks do their best to reproduce the motifs of an equalizer with knurled-textured studs that bring to mind audio jacks and crown guards inspired by the fader on mixing consoles. <h3>Two In Titanium</h3>

Available in 37mm and 43mm diameters, the first two Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Music Edition models in the line are made of titanium. Both feature a blue dial that serves as a canvas for the coloured equalizer that certainly does not make you miss a date window. This peppy contrast complements the elegant AP monogram in polished white gold at 12 o'clock, along with the 18k white gold hour markers and hands featuring a luminescent coating.

The 37mm reference has been paired with an interchangeable blue rubber strap featuring a mosaic effect pattern. The interchangeable strap system is a first for a 37mm Audemars Piguet model. Additionally, you can pair the model with turquoise, yellow and green rubber straps. The 43mm iteration also comes with an interchangeable blue rubber strap matching the dial, along with three additional turquoise, yellow and green rubber straps. These references have been equipped with a sapphire and titanium caseback engraved with 'Limited Edition of 500 Pieces'.

The 37mm Ref. 77600TI.OO.A343CA.01 is powered by Caliber 5909, which achieves a power reserve of around 60 hours and inside the 43mm Ref. 15600TI.OO.A343CA.01 beats the Caliber 4309, which delivers a power reserve of around 70 hours.

<h3>Two With Gems</h3>

Two 18k white gold 37mm and 43mm models boast a dial and bezel set with coloured harmony-cut stones, both featuring a blue aventurine dial with the equalizer motif, adorned with rubies, peridots, tsavorites, green, blue, and orange sapphires. A similar design also embellishes the bezels of both references.

The 37mm Ref. 77601BC.YY.D343CA.01 has been set with 166 stones, while the 43mm Ref. 15601BC.YY.D343CA.01 packs a total of 230 stones. Both the models feature the polished AP monogram at 12 o'clock, along with the 18k white gold hour markers and hands.

Wrapping the wrist will be a blue interchangeable strap for the two iterations that will also come with three additional rubber straps in turquoise, yellow, and green. For the 37mm reference, the strap features the mosaic effect pattern. The 37mm and 43mm Royal Oak Offshores find their power in the Caliber 5909 and 4309 respectively.

<h3>A Symphony In Ceramic</h3>

The fifth and the last model is a black stunner in a 43mm ceramic case that flaunts a monochrome aesthetic, finding a splendid contrast in the timepiece's elements in titanium and the vivid equalizer design on the dial. This low-key, but high-contrast timepiece has 10 different colors printed onto the Tapisserie motif.

The hand-finished selfwinding Caliber 4309 is visible through the titanium and sapphire caseback of this 43mm Ref. 15600CE.OO.A002CA.01, which has been engraved with 'Limited Edition of 250 Pieces'. Audemars Piguet offers this interesting timepiece on an interchangeable black rubber strap to become one with the overall dark aesthetic of the watch.

By now, it is certainly no secret that Audemars Piguet are feverishly determined to continue defending their position on the throne at the apex of the luxury sports watch market. Having created the market in 1972 with the legendary AP Royal Oak, I think it is pretty fair that they continue to corner the market. After all, if someone is going to be the king of the realm, isn't it only fitting that it would be the holy trinity watchmaker that conjured it from the Quartz Crisis' ashes? With the Royal Oak collection, the Royal Oak Offshore, and the Royal Oak Concept collection, I think it is safe to say AP has the sector on lock.&nbsp;

But that aside, while getting to the top of any market is always challenging, staying there is often the most difficult part, and AP certainly understands that. This latest release proves it, in fact, at least in my opinion. With updated mechanics, a new case design, and some stylistic throwback to old designs, I think the latest duo of Royal Oak Offshore models proves that AP will not rest on their laurels anytime soon. It's their seat at the top, and they won't let anyone take it without a fight, clearly.

<h3>So, what's new?</h3>

A mainstay in Audemars Piguet's lineup for almost 30 years, it is no surprise that the Royal Oak Offshore has undergone some pretty serious evolutions in its time. From different movements to materials to dial layouts and colourways, just about everything a brand could do to a watch has been done to the Royal Oak Offshore collection. So, why the big fuss this time?

While the Royal Oak Offshore collection has been evolving quite drastically with new case shapes, different pushers and so on, the latest duo brings it back a touch and retains more of the original collection's soul. Ultimately, this latest release marries modern mechanics and aesthetics with some splashes from the original. Keeping one foot firmly rooted in Emmanuel Gueit's original designs, the Royal Oak Offshore reminds the industry who it is, why it came about and that AP are not interested in change for the sake of it. Honestly, I love these two new watches, so let's get into them.

<h3>Design Design Design</h3>

I really do think watch designers that work for iconic Maisons like the Audemars Piguet's of the world have an incredibly difficult job. How do you design a watch that purists can be happy with that features new design choices? It's an arduous task, but this is how you do it.

Retaining the original's muscular 42mm diameter case, the latest duo of Royal Oak Offshores pay homage to their predecessor by keeping its rubberised pump pushers and screw-locked crown. Available in stainless steel with the light blue dial variant and titanium for the khaki green, this duo simultaneously keeps its fingers on the pulse of what the contemporary watch community likes while still looking after its own style. By exploring two different material options, AP acknowledges the demand for new materials while also remaining rooted in the Offshore's stainless steel lineage. A nod to the present while showcasing an appreciation for the old.&nbsp;

The duo is fitted to dial-matching textured rubber straps, which include the brand new interchangeable strap system that enables quick and easy swapping of straps between watches and even buckles. Our very own founder, Austen Chu, changed between straps without tools in just 15 seconds. Anyone who has had to fumble with screwdrivers, screws, spring bars or other watchmakers tools to change a watch strap can appreciate how fast that is. Clearly, this is the way AP want to continue pushing. They are determined to remain at the forefront of watch enthusiast's desires and appeal to conveniences. It's the small things that make any luxury item luxurious, and AP are nailing it. The very same thing can be seen in their dials.

<h3>The Dials</h3>

Perfectly blending modern nuance and throwback styling, the latest Royal Oak dials see the return of the original's vertical chronograph register layout with the date placed at 3 o'clock as opposed to the very love/hate 4:30 on the horizontal layout Offshores. While featuring that heritage-inspired design cue, the dials also use AP's Méga Tapisserie texture. While the collection was born with the original Royal Oak's Petite Tapisserie, AP released the Méga Tapisserie in 2001 as a more aggressive take on the subtle Petite Tapisserie, in keeping with the Royal Oak Offshore's aesthetic.&nbsp;

Subtly modernising the dial layout, AP have also rearranged the subdials to improve legibility – a slight improvement for convenience's sake; it does make a difference. The hour counter has swapped places with the small seconds counter, so the former is now at 12 o'clock, while the small seconds counter now appears at 6 o'clock, with the minute counter remaining at 9 o'clock. In one final stylistic piece of luxury detailing, the counters are now equidistant from the centre of the dial for more visual appeal. If I remember correctly, the subdial at 9 o'clock was further out on the vertical layouts that have come before this latest generation, but I could be wrong on that one.&nbsp;

<h3>Movement Upgrade</h3>

Moving from the outside to inside, the true magic of the Royal Oak Offshore has been unlocked with a rather impressive movement upgrade. Powered by the new in-house cal. 4404, these beauties feature flyback vertical clutch column-wheel chronographs with a rather beefy 70 hours of power reserve. That's a near 20-hour upgrade compared to most of the previous generation of Royal Oak Chronographs, and, to top it off, these movements are entirely integrated. That is to say; they don't include chronograph modules; they are chronographs movements built from the ground up to be chronographs. It might sound like a throwaway concept, but integrated chronographs are incredibly complex, and the cal. 4404, which is a slightly modified version of the recently released cal. 4401 (vertical subdials versus horizontal) is a monster.&nbsp;

Featuring a sapphire exhibition caseback, we even have the opportunity to view the movement's incredible finishing and its beautiful 22ct pink gold winding rotor. Complete with its own embossed AP initials, it is fitting for the movement, which contains the impeccable level of finishing we would expect from a watchmaker like Audemars Piguet.

<h3>Quick Take</h3>

Unapologetically modern in their styling, I must say I do really like these two watches. With the green reserved for the titanium case and blue for the steel, the choice is ultimately a tough one to make. On the one hand, the blue is stunning, but on the other, the green is entirely transformative and on-trend. With its dark hues, it can range from a near-black colour to vibrant emerald. In addition, titanium is a relatively novel material that is super light and provides an unfamiliar experience on the wrist compared to the ubiquity of stainless steel. Then again, the stainless steel variant's blue dial is stunning, so I wouldn't begrudge anyone for opting for it.&nbsp;

With the timely movement upgrade, incredible strap changing system, updated dials and iconic heritage, these watches and any additions AP make to the collection down the line are going to prove incredibly popular. We all know the story with AP and their crazy levels of demand, their watches are hard to buy, and with their latest releases being as on point as they have been over the last 12 months, I really can't imagine that not being the case. So bravo, AP, now let me have one please!

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Gets an Upgrade

For a design that’s supposedly as brawny and iterative as the Royal Oak Offshore, it sure has demonstrated a great deal of aesthetic nuance over the decades. This year alone, we’ve seen AP’s largish sports watch par excellence remixed as a <a href="https://wristcheck.com/discover/watch-drop/the-2021-audemars-piguet-royal-oak-offshore-diver">diver</a>, <a href="https://wristcheck.com/discover/watch-drop/the-audemars-piguet-royal-oak-offshore-selfwinding-flying-tourbillon-flyback-chronograph">flying tourbillon</a> and even an entire <a href="https://wristcheck.com/discover/watch-drop/audemars-piguet-presents-the-next-generation-of-royal-oak-offshore">new ‘generation’ of 43mm references</a>. Point being: there’s clearly still creative potential to be coaxed from the brand’s beastliest collection – a summation borne out further by the arrival of three more Royal Oak Offshores, this time ‘round inspired by a historic predecessor.&nbsp;

Unlike the aforementioned next-gen Offshores – typified by a traditional tricompax layout and Méga Tapisserie dials – this month’s new models share a demonstrable connection with Emmanuel Gueit’s historic 1993 design.&nbsp;

Old aficionados of the collection will doubtless recognise the similarities: the distinctive profile and proportion of the 42mm case; the classic ‘12-6-9’ chronograph totalisers; and the absence of any embellishment on external surfaces except for a few choice rubber pushers. (In the inaugural Royal Oak Offshore – a.k.a. “The Beast”, the latter were as much a practical consideration as they were decorative – helping to seal the watch and improve water-resistance.)&nbsp;

Collectors of the OG Offshore still have a lot to be curious about – especially where wearability is concerned. In line with the divers and 43mm references released earlier in the year, these historically minded Offshores incorporate a number of features that are very much a product of contemporary watchmaking.&nbsp;

The first of these – arguably most relevant where consumers are concerned – is the introduction of the interchangeable strap system. As with the ROO divers, the introduction of this system allows wearers to accessorise on the fly. In practical terms, the strap-changing system is reliable and user-friendly; utilising a ‘click and release’ locking mechanism that takes a matter of seconds to come to grips with.&nbsp;

The other modern innovation is mechanical. While AP certainly hasn't reinvented the (column) wheel when it comes to this new Offshore movement, it’s a very stylish and meticulous take on the traditional flyback chronograph.&nbsp;

Modelled partially on the same movement equipped in the <a href="https://wristcheck.com/discover/editor's-pick/the-audemars-piguet-remaster01">[Re]master01</a>, the calibre 4404 is topped with AP’s characteristic, fan-shaped rotor (in these models, the metal in question is some very swish 22-carat pink gold) and offers a good balance between power supply and accuracy. Of course, the vertical clutch chronograph’s sprawling anatomy makes it an ideal platform for decoration; and AP has made sure to showcase as much of the calibre 4404 through the caseback as possible – chamfers and all.&nbsp;

Consistent with the broad desire in this instance to harken back to Offshores of yesteryear, two of these three new models have been kitted with richly hued dials in an archival colourway that AP refers to as “Night Blue, Cloud 50”.&nbsp;

In stainless steel, the colour combination is an obvious nod to the original 1993 release; whereas the visual panache of pink gold on blue really gets across the Offshore’s credentials as a balls-to-the-wall luxury diver.&nbsp;

Continuing in the tradition of watches like the Royal Oak Supersonnerie, the titanium version of this new Offshore has been given the stealthiest dial option: mixing together dark grey Petite&nbsp;Tapisserie with chronograph registers in a shade somewhere between black and anthracite.&nbsp;

Audemars Piguet Parties Like It’s 1993 with Three New Royal Oak Offshores

Often brushed aside in favor of its older sibling, there's no doubt that the Royal Oak Offshore deserves more respect from the watchmaking community. While a comparison to the Royal Oak is only natural, it's about time we look at it in its singularity

The discussion surrounding certain watches and their status within the watchmaking community has been going on for time immemorial. Is it an icon, or is it not? Is it a flop, or is it not? Is it good, or is it not? These conversations are an integral part of horology as they enable us to discover different perspectives on a topic and understand things from various points of views. While one person might like one watch, another might dislike it. For example, I think the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore is an icon, so let me explore the collection and see if I can win you over.&nbsp;

Origin Story</h3>

Before we delve into why I think the Offshore is an icon, I would like to begin by exploring its history and where the model comes from. The Offshore is often just discounted as a re-hashed version of the Royal Oak, and that is something I would disagree with, but in the context of its history, this is an understandable perspective.

Released in 1993, the Offshore was conceived by young designer Emmanuel Gueit over a 4-year period which was supposed to align with the AP Royal Oak's 20th anniversary in 1992, but didn't quite end up so. The Royal Oak Offshore's philosophy was simple, to cater to the demands of a younger, sportier and trendier audience than the Royal Oak. While the Royal Oak was undoubtedly popular, it was by no means a true sports watch. The Offshore was designed to fill this gap in much the same way the Rolex Sea-Dweller was intended as a more extreme version of the Submariner – to have a more robust design with sport-specific conveniences built into it, which I'll explore later.

Gueit's original concept sketches didn't receive much praise within AP, and as such, only 100 prototypes were produced. It was seen as being beneath AP's remit as one of the Holy Trinity members to create such an oversized sports-focused watch. In the same way that Gerald Genta's original Royal Oak and Nautilus designs were shunned by the watchmaking world, he too shunned the Offshore's design and the direction AP took his beloved Royal Oak. Ironically, however, I don't think the Offshore's initial lack of popularity has any standing on its status as an icon today, in the very same vein as the Nautilus or Royal Oak, so let's explore its design, and how it has ultimately become an icon.

Unique Design</h3>

Featuring the Royal Oak's octagonal bezel and iconic integrated bracelet, I will concede that the Offshore does resemble the Royal Oak on the face of it. With that said, when has watchmaking ever been about looking at things at face value? We have to explore the nitty-gritty details to see where things become their own, and the Offshore is full of those details.&nbsp;

If we examine the Offshore, its DNA is clearly moulded to suit active wearers that want to get the most out of their watches. While its bracelet might use the Royal Oak's shape, its links are rounded over on their insides to facilitate a more comfortable experience on the wrist. Likewise, its overall design is far more robust than the Royal Oak's would ever hope to be. Measuring at 42mm in diameter, the Royal Oak Offshore, nicknamed "The Beast", was the first oversized luxury sports watch, at least in the modern context. Thus, the Offshore kicked off the trend that saw the rise of Panerai and other larger watch designs that dominated the 2000s. That's not to say Panerai would be making small watches if it wasn't for the Offshore, but the Offshore was first by a few months, so it has to get some credit.

Alongside its large diameter, the Offshore is a thick watch thanks to its larger rubber gasket, which provides superior water resistance, keeping with the robust and sports-oriented design that Gueit was going for. Furthermore, the Offshore features a chronograph, a tachymeter, a rubberised crown and pushers, a date window with a cyclops lens, thicker and more heavily lumed hands and indices, and crown guards – all signs that its design was focused on enabling the Offshore to take a beating. None of this can really be said for the Royal Oak. Sure, it was a luxury stainless steel sports watch, but in the same vein that the Ferrari 308 was a great sports car in the '70s, it's no match for the Ferrari 348 of the '90s, and neither is the Royal Oak a match to the Offshore in the sports category.&nbsp;

Beyond its design logic and historical provenance, I want to hammer home that the Offshore is an icon thanks to its status as a legendary sports watch, perhaps one of the first true sports watches. How might I do that? Well, I'll let AP do the talking. The Offshore has an incredible number of limited and special editions that all speak to its use as a sports watch – as it was intended to.

Alongside its Diver collection, another hint at its intention as a sports watch, the Offshore has famously been used as the silhouette for automotive-inspired limited editions like the Jarno Trulli, Gstaad Classic, Michael Schumacher and many others. It's also often used to celebrate the Queen Elizabeth II's Cup, a horse-racing event, and to celebrate the Swiss Sailing Team Alinghi amongst several other sports, sporting occasions and athletes like Lebron James.&nbsp;

However you view the Offshore's design, I think it is undeniable that it is an icon amongst sports watches, and thus an icon in the entire arena of horology. Sure, it's a watch inspired by another, but if that means it can't be considered an icon, then watches like the Aquanaut, the Sea-Dweller, the Explorer, the Speedmaster, and so many others have to be excluded too. After all, they were all inspired by what came before them, but, thankfully, this isn't how we view these incredible timepieces. They are just like the Offshore: icons.&nbsp;

It's a new era for an icon, and Audemars Piguet are not taking any prisoners. The latest Haute Horlogerie addition to the Royal Oak Offshore family means serious business as AP kicks off a new generation of Offshore with a bang
As someone that writes about (and is somewhat obsessed with) watches, I often find myself looking at releases from brands within the upper echelons of watchmaking with a bit more scepticism than most. I try to see how the watch fits into their portfolio, how it expands upon their offerings and if it is hinting at where the collection will go in the future. Ultimately, I'm trying to figure out if a release is coming from a place of strategy or is it a cacophony of design that exists solely to extract money from collector's wallets.&nbsp;

At least, in my opinion, the upper echelons of watchmaking should be focused on their watches first, finances second. With that in mind, I would like to discuss the new Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Flyback Chronograph. Sure, its name is an untidy mouthful, but it is a symphony of design. I just cannot get enough of this watch. It nearly makes me emotional just by looking at it.

The Royal Oak Offshore's Place within Audemars Piguet</h3>

Released in 1993, the Royal Oak Offshore was designed to expand upon the iconic Royal Oak collection as a sports-focused timepiece that could take a beating and perform at the highest standards possible. Featuring AP's artisanal craftsmanship, impeccable design and avant-garde taste for the horological, the Royal Oak Offshore was a true maverick, just like most of what AP releases. This latest release builds upon that heritage and sets the entire collection up to become a truly spectacular offering.

The Offshore has always played second-fiddle to the Royal Oak, but the new Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Flyback Chronograph seems to be a declaration of intent from the Offshore itself that it is no longer content being the bridesmaid. It feels as though this is the final boss level that concludes the game, but we know that isn't the case. It's never the case with AP. They're only getting started with this new Offshore generation, and to be frank, that gets me very excited. If this watch is anything to go by, the latest generation of Royal Oak Offshore is going to be incredible. So, let's explore it.

Design and Aesthetics</h3>

As with every watch stemming from any of the Royal Oak families, the new Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Flyback Chronograph pays a respectful homage to its heritage with a raised octagonal bezel secured with exposed screws and an aggressive case design packed to the rafters with a flurry of surface finishes and textures.

Crafted from titanium with a sandblasted finish, the new 43mm case design is ergonomic and slightly modernised as the trend for large watches gets toned down a bit. Sitting atop the case is a titanium bezel with the same sandblasted texture that gives the entire design a sense of cohesiveness. Building on that, the design includes wide hand-polished chamfers on the case and bezel alike to solidify their sense of visual continuity even further. AP opted for a satin finish with the ceramic crown and push-pieces that aesthetically separates them from the case and builds upon the design with an excellent sense of three-dimensionality, which the dial and movement feed off too, but more on them later.

Looking at the entire crown and push-piece assembly, the titanium crown guards are angular and lack the same chamfers found on the rest of the case. Almost like a guitar solo that seems out of place at first, that visual dissonance works perfectly as the physical construction appears to be in perfect harmony with the synchronised madness that is its skeletonised dial, which just so happens to be my favourite aspect of this spectacular watch.

Featuring a wonderfully openworked dial, the timepiece's physical construction translates through to its core. We are afforded a view of a black inscribed rehaut with minute markings that frame beautifully openworked bridges suspended over the immaculately designed movement below. The monochromatic blacks and greys work wonderfully with the white gold luminescent hands and red chronograph indicators to create a legible and aggressive appearance.

With transparent chronograph subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock and a flying tourbillon at 6 o'clock, the whole dial is an asymmetrical marvel. Before we get into the tourbillon and the movement, I can't help but notice the apertures sandwiching the tourbillon. Their shape seems deliberately reminiscent of minute repeater gongs. Could it be? The Royal Oak Offshore might add a minute repeater complication to its ranks down the line? I might be wrong, but it's great to let your mind wander. Either way, the apertures are angular, textured below and tie into the aesthetic perfectly.

New Old Movement</h3>

Finally, we can explore the reason I have to type such a long name: AP's cal. 2967 movement. While it was first introduced in the Code 11.59 collection in 2020 as the cal. 2952, this latest version is adapted for the 43mm Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Flyback Chronograph's new case design and features some sportier aesthetics which feed into the Offshore's raison d’être - sports, functionality and utility.

Partially viewable within and around the openworked chronograph subdials, the cal. 2967 reveals its labyrinthine architecture in its totality as we turn the watch over and peer through its sapphire crystal exhibition caseback. As fantastically finished as we expect, the cal. 2967 features the same grey-scale monochromatic aesthetic as the rest of the timepiece's construction. A PVD-coating has been added to the titanium bridges with polished bevels lacking PVD-coating, which creates a two-tone contrast - completed with a partially openworked 22ct gold PVD-coated winding rotor the cal. 2967 fits the watch perfectly.

A new generation of Offshore that could not be more aesthetically impressive, it would be remiss of AP to give the cal. 2967 middle-of-the-road specs, which I'm glad to report they certainly did not do. The cal. 2967 features a column-wheel actuated flyback chronograph, as its name so proudly suggests, alongside a flying tourbillon and a 65-hour power reserve. So, thankfully you'll be safe to take this watch off for a few days at a time and return to its flying tourbillon methodically spinning to its heart's content. Albeit, I must admit if you can take this watch off for a second, I will need to see what other watches you have in your collection.

<h3>Quick Take</h3>

For any brand that is lucky enough (and unlucky in a sense) to have an icon as powerful as the Royal Oak Offshore amongst their ranks, introducing a new generation will always be a trying exercise. Still, I think AP has nailed this watch. From its case design to its movement and even its quick-change strap system, which is quickly making its way into the collection, the Royal Oak Offshore is clearly undergoing a stage of metamorphosis, and I think it's only getting started. Limited to 100 pieces, the Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Flyback Chronograph is only a letter of intent, and I am beside myself with excitement to see what they release down the line. This will be a fantastic vehicle for AP to demonstrate their watchmaking might, and I think some other brands might have to pull up their socks if they want to compete.

I always laugh when people try to claim that Audemars Piguet are a one-dimensional brand. I feel it is a rather blatant oversimplification of their offerings. Sure, the Royal Oak and its descendants feature some long-lasting and incredibly iconic designs. Still, the new 43mm Royal Oak Offshore demonstrates just how much AP's thought process is to improve what they offer. The new 43mm Offshores are a testament to that, and it's clear why when you compare it to the model it has just replaced.

History Repeats Itself

When the Royal Oak Offshore was released in 1993, its sole purpose was to extend the Royal Oak's offering and exist as a hyper-focused luxury sports timepiece. While the Royal Oak was a luxury sports timepiece too, it wasn't robust enough to withstand the demands of an active wearer that wanted a watch to do it all.&nbsp;

With this pretty simple task, Emmanuel Gueit, the Offshore's designer, created the Offshore that would evolve the Royal Oak's design into a sports-focused watch with features like a chronograph, a tachymeter, improved water resistance, a more ergonomic bracelet design, a new dial layout and a host of other things.&nbsp;

In the same vein that the original Offshore was an evolution of the Royal Oak, I feel the new 43mm Offshore variant is an evolution of the 44mm Offshore variant's design. With a long list of changes made, the watch has clearly been developed with the same rigid focus on its wearer that the original Offshore had all those years ago.

A New Movement… Finally</h3>

Beginning in the same vein as Randy Lai when he wrote our <a href="https://wristcheck.com/discover/watch-drop/audemars-piguet-presents-the-next-generation-of-royal-oak-offshore">Watch Drop on the release&nbsp;of the new 43mm Offshores</a>&nbsp;(where he provides an excellent rundown of the various models offered and his hands-on impression), I'd like to start with the new Offshore's most significant improvement – its new movement. As Randy pointed out in his piece, so many watch writers seem to overlook the movement, instead favouring to delve deeper into the aesthetics of a timepiece. I think doing that here would be a shame. Found in practically every Royal Oak Offshore since its creation in 2007, the self-winding cal. 3126/3840 modular movement has finally been replaced by AP's new chronograph movement, the cal. 4401 – itself introduced in the Code 11.59.

While the cal. 3126/3840 is by no means a bad movement by any measure, its modular construction (with a <a href="https://journal.hautehorlogerie.org/en/the-dubois-depraz-chronograph-module-switzerlands-best-kept-secret/">Dubois Depraz chronograph module</a>) is somewhat downmarket, so I'm ecstatic to see AP introduce a new movement to the Offshore that will push it in the right direction. You see, the new cal. 4401 was built from the ground up as a fully integrated chronograph movement, and that's a big step up.

Apologies for the nerdy talk about to follow, but that has enabled AP to pack the new cal. 4401 with tech and specs that the older cal. 3126/3840 had been lacking. For a start, the new cal. 4401 beats at a much higher frequency of 28,800 bph (4 Hz), as opposed to 21,600 bph (3 Hz), providing more accurate timekeeping and a smoother second-hand sweep. Also, the new cal. 4401 features a flyback function so the chronograph can be reset instantaneously. Much like the original Offshore had its wearer in mind, so too does the new 43mm Offshore.&nbsp;

As mentioned, the cal. 4401 features a faster beat rate. This, in turn, means the movement will run out of energy faster as it powers the balance wheel to rotate back and forth quicker than it would at, say, 3 Hz. As such, you would expect a 4 Hz timepiece to run out of power reserve before a 3 Hz movement. If all things were equal, that would undoubtedly be the case between the cal. 4401 and the cal. 3126/3840, but nothing is comparable here – the cal. 4401 is a fully integrated movement, remember? That means AP have been able to equip the cal. 4401 with a larger mainspring barrel and pack it with an appropriately modern 70 hours of power reserve – plenty enough to take your watch off for a few days and return to it still beating away.&nbsp;

Updated Ergonomics</h3>

If it's not apparent by now, the new Offshore features a smaller case diameter of 43mm instead of the older 44mm case size. While a millimetre always seems like a small change, in watchmaking, it is the difference between a perfect fit and a watch that just won't sit right. Still retaining its impressive stature, this 43mm case also features some ergonomic upgrades that improve its positioning on the wrist. Namely, a slight curve along the 12 to 6 o'clock axis across the ceramic bezel and sapphire crystal makes wearing it a more comfortable experience for a wider variety of wrist sizes. Compared to its 44mm sibling, this is a nice gesture from AP as they continue to improve their watches and show their customers that they are taking their concerns to heart.&nbsp;

Beyond the case change, the 43mm Offshore also sees the addition of the innovative quick strap-changing system that AP had introduced earlier in the year with the <a href="https://wristcheck.com/discover/watch-drop/the-2021-audemars-piguet-royal-oak-offshore-diver">Offshore Diver</a>. With buttons on the back of the interstitial lugs, the wearer can remove one of the two straps that come with their timepiece and quickly snap the new strap into place.

Blending their need for ergonomic perfection and aesthetic freshness, the 43mm Offshore's most significant aesthetic difference from its predecessor is its dial. Featuring a new subdial layout of 3, 6 and 9, the chronograph is immediately more intuitive than the 12, 6, 9 structure of the 44mm Offshore. While the date has been moved to 4:30 and lost its magnification, the dial's overall legibility has been drastically improved for the better – how often do you need an immediate date read anyway? Alongside its new layout – which is more in keeping with the industry standard chronograph layout, by the way – the subdials also feature more significant inscriptions, making for an easier reading than what was there before.&nbsp;

Next up on the list of changes is the tachymeter scale. While they are seldom used these days, they still speak to the functionality that the Offshore tries to offer. Thus, it plays a vital role in the timepiece's use-case as a sports watch. AP have interestingly swapped the 44mm Offshore's base 1000 scale for a base 500 scale in the new 43mm Offshore. While it can now only measure slower speeds, it can do so more accurately than the 1000 scale 44mm Offshore could, so while the functionality has been reduced, the accuracy and ease of use have been increased. Notice a theme at all? Ease of use has really been this timepiece's raison d'etre if you ask me.&nbsp;

Finally, in AP's last bid to make this timepiece as user-friendly as possible, the 43mm Offshore has a larger crown than its 44mm predecessor. This makes for a more comfortable winding, time-setting and date-changing experience as your fingers no longer have to navigate the crown guard/pushers as much as they used to.&nbsp;

Final Words</h3>

One of the most iconic aspects of the Royal Oak/Royal Oak Offshore family has been its tapisserie dial, and with inspiration to switch things up, AP has even changed that on the 43mm Offshore! On the 44mm Offshore, and the vast majority of other Offshores, it featured a Mega Tapisserie where the square sections were individual to one another. Instead, the latest 43mm model forgoes that design in place of 'X' shapes connecting each square. Providing a stunning visual depth to each of the five variants that have been released so far, this dial update does little in the way of ergonomics but a lot in terms of design.

Perhaps signalling just how serious AP are regarding updating their offerings for the better, I love the fact that they have played with something that was often thought of as sacred. Will we see this new dial design permeate through the rest of the Royal Oak collections, like the new strap system and cal. 4401 movement? Only time will tell, but I hope we do.

Since its scene-stealing arrival in 1993 — now the stuff of watch industry folklore — the Royal Oak Offshore has grown to encompass an entire eponymous collection: ranging from the best-selling 42mm chronograph to purpose-built models like the <a href="https://wristcheck.com/discover/watch-drop/the-2021-audemars-piguet-royal-oak-offshore-diver">updated Offshore diver</a>. In the vein of the latter, AP has just 'refreshed'&nbsp;its Offshore collection with a quintet of new 43mm releases — said to retain “the essence of the [original’s] characteristics”, albeit with a renewed focus on comfort and contemporary aesthetics — and we had the chance to get our hands on four of them, save for the <a href="https://www.audemarspiguet.com/com/en/watch-collection/royal-oak-offshore/26420IO.OO.A009CA.01.html">grey titanium iteration</a>. We’re going to save the ligne-by-ligne breakdown of everything that’s changed for a future ‘<a href="https://wristcheck.com/discover/watch-101/rolex-daytona-real-vs-fake">Side by Side</a>’. In the meantime, Iet’s talk about those developments that aren’t blatantly obvious. <h3>A chronograph movement of a higher calibre</h3>

In the usual course of events, watch writers tend to dedicate ample page space to the physical attributes of a new release, before (oftentimes begrudgingly) regurgitating a press release that sets out the technical properties of the relevant movement. Today, we’re going to flip the script a little (heresy, yes I know) by tackling what lies beneath first. Namely, the calibre 4401: a huge leap forward, in terms of technical sophistication, for the Offshore collection. I opted to start this particular ‘Watch Drop’ here because, as it turns out, there’s quite a bit to discuss.&nbsp;

For starters: the calibre is a total departure from the F. Piguet-derived movements of the 44mm format, making good on feedback (from more than a few collectors) that chronograph modules really shouldn’t be a thing <a href="https://www.fratellowatches.com/royal-oak-offshore-44/#gref">“in this price category”</a>. Instead, the 4401 is a fully integrated movement with a vertical clutch, and unlike what you’ll find in the larger Offshores, capable of storing up to 70 hours of reserve power with an oscillation rate that’s measurably superior. To top off all that, the calibre features a flyback mechanism that allows for instantaneous reset of the chronograph, a little sweetener that tracks with AP’s decision to aim the new 43mm releases at “active adventurers”.&nbsp;

Despite the inevitable head-to-toe comparison between this Offshore and its 44mm sibling (kudos to whoever gets to write that up), this being a ‘Watch Drop’ and all, we still need to take a quick inventory of the aesthetic changes being introduced. Most dramatically, almost every external element has been gently curved to make the 43mm architecture more approachable for a range of different wrist sizes.

Looking at the watch side-on, you’ll see that the watch’s bezel and sapphire crystal trace a gentle arc from 6 to 12 — this subtle contour effect being further enhanced through the case’s chamfers and shape of the chronograph pushers. That case has further been outfitted with the same strap-changing system we first glimpsed on the Offshore Diver in March, which makes use of a ‘double-push’ button set into the back of two interstitial lugs so wearers can change straps, without the hassle of a springbar, in a matter of seconds.

It’s probably on the dial where you’ll find the highest concentration of updates to the previous Offshore aesthetic — starting with the méga tapisserie. Given each lozenge’s size (all of which have been decorated with a stripe finish) you hardly need a loupe to make out the X-shaped motifs that connect together the entire pattern. Beyond being a tonne of fun to look at, they also lend the dial an element of increased visual depth and speak to the ever-evolving ways in which AP has harnessed its signature dial finish.&nbsp;

What you may well need a loupe to see are the chronograph registers. Still made up of three segments (an external zone, minute track, and circular-grain inner dial) their look and feel is now more closely aligned with what you’ll find in the standard Royal Oak chrono. No bad thing, especially considering that the handsets used for timing are now also colour-coded. The strength of that contrast isn’t necessarily uniform — the version with the ‘smoked taupe’ dial uses a colour scheme for the seconds hand that is, at a clip, fairly similar — but works more often than it doesn’t.&nbsp;

In addition to the ‘smoked taupe’ iteration, AP has released another of the 43mm Offshores in stainless steel, sporting a black/grey/red colour scheme that’s likely to appeal to motoring enthusiasts. Elsewhere, there are two titanium models kitted with either a grey or blue dial (my pick of the litter) while the proverbial odd duck out is a very swaggery model in pink gold. Between these and the updated Divers, summer 2021 is shaping up to be the summer of the Offshore.

Name-checking luxury brands in tracks isn't a new thing — and from Jay-Z's lyrics, it's clear that he (like the rest of the world) is a fan of Audemars Piguet. By the early 2000s, Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) was already something of a watch collector. At this point, he met the American Managing Director of Audemars Piguet, a former professional golfer by the name of Francois-Henry Bennahmias. Aggressively styled luxury divers were on top, and it was the birth of the high-profile watch collab, a strategy that would help propel AP to billion-dollar status. And thus, Jay-Z and AP stepped onto the stage together to announce the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Jay-Z 10th Anniversary limited edition. The launch party was — as you might expect — star-studded, with Kanye West, Naomi Campbell and Sean Combs (‘Diddy’) in attendance.

This watch itself holds its own. Audemars Piguet released 50 in steel, 30 in rose gold and 20 in platinum. The version we're specifically looking at here is the rarest (and heaviest) of the bunch — platinum. And while the customisation on this piece wasn't too wild, there are a few unique touches that make it stand out.&nbsp;

The fact that this 42mm watch comes on an alligator strap and has a stunning rich blue sunburst dial ensures that this watch is about as dressy as a Royal Oak Offshore can get. The caseback bears Jay-Z's signature, which is a great touch.&nbsp;

The original box for this watch included one last easter egg. A fourth-generation iPod, colour matched with the watch that also bore Jay-Z's signature — in 2005, it didn't get much cooler than that. Hopefully, the iPod came loaded with Roc-A-Fella's back catalogue.
